Market Demand and Capacity Constraints
According to Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew, market studies indicate strong and viable demand for direct connectivity between Africa and Australia. However, the launch of the route has been delayed due to a temporary shortage of aircraft capable of performing non-stop ultra-long-haul flights.
"Currently, we do not have the specific aircraft required to operate flights to Australia," CEO Mesfin Tasew stated, highlighting the current capacity limitations facing the airline’s expansion plans.
Aircraft Deliveries from Boeing and Airbus
To address the fleet constraint, Ethiopian Airlines is preparing to take delivery of multiple wide-body, ultra-long-range aircraft secured through existing purchase agreements with Boeing and Airbus.
The CEO confirmed that deliveries under these contracts are scheduled to begin in January 2028 (January 2020 Ethiopian Calendar). As soon as the new aircraft arrive and are integrated into the fleet, operational preparations for the Australia route will commence in earnest.
Strategic Impact and Global Connectivity
The addition of direct flights to Australia will solidify Ethiopian Airlines' status as a global carrier, making it the first African airline to connect Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia.
The upcoming service is expected to significantly benefit the large Ethiopian and African diaspora communities in Australia, providing seamless transit options through Addis Ababa and boosting international passenger traffic across the continent.
